1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

In other words – love is SAFE.   We all want to feel safe in our surroundings and in our relations. It is evident that the description of love in 1 Corinthians mimics the fruit of the spirit in Galatians 5:22. They go hand in hand. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we will exhibit those fruits: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, self-control, faith, and the rest. This only makes sense because God is love 1John 4:7-8.

So God is consistent. He is love, He gives us the Holy Spirit, as the Holy Spirit grows in us, He produces fruit, the fruit of the Spirit changes our character, and it is evident in how we are and how we interact with others. That is the demonstration of love, and it makes us feel confident, secure, and safe.

We’ve all heard the “do unto others as you would have done unto you” the golden rule, the sermon on the mount in Mt 7. Does this mean I’ll treat you how you treat me? The worldly view would be to make this a reciprocity. But that isn’t what Jesus is saying. That’s not what Paul is saying. We are to act out of the Spirit regardless of how we’re treated – good or bad. We are to act out of the Spirit in a way that we would want to be treated. What makes us feel safe in our relations? How can we make other’s feel safe? If others felt safe around us, would we enjoy life better? Would we have les anxiety and stress? Would we feel and demonstrate more love?

“Beloved, let us love one another. For love is of God and everyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God, for God is Love” 1Jn 4:7-8

Prayer

Dear God, You’re my hiding place, You protect me from trouble. I feel safe and protected, and secure when I am with You and You are with me. When I’m filled with the Holy Spirit, I know Your love surrounds me. I am safe in You. Lord let me know how to make others feel as You make me feel. Let me be filled and demonstrate You love to others. Not as a duty, but as a lifestyle. I know I am accepted by You, and I am loved by You. Create in me that same heart of love. AMEN
