1 John 4: 13-16
This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
This portion of John’s letter to several Gentile congregations is so typical of his logic, the scientific method applied to mysteries and miracles.
I. The Hypothesis: God is Love and the source of all love
- He has given us his Spirit
- He has sacrificed his only son for the forgiveness of sin
- When we acknowledge this, God comes to live in us
III. Therefore: We can rely on the love of God
IV. Conclusion: Because God has first loved us, we are able to love one another.
A convincing argument to believers and non-believers alike; if you are able to feel compassion, put yourself in someone’s place, care about another’s wellbeing, it is because God first loved his creation, humankind. And God loves you.
Heavenly Creator, giver of love and Spirit, help us to show your love to the world regardless of our hurried lives. It takes so little to smile or lend a hand. Give us “need” radar and the Spirit to reflect your love to others. Amen
