5 Get wisdom, get understanding;
do not forget my words or turn away from them.
6 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you;
love her, and she will watch over you.
7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom.
Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
Do not forsake wisdom and she will protect you. What magnificent words of advice! Feelings, emotions, impulse actions and off-the-cuff remarks can and do get us into trouble. Wisdom stops to consider for a moment, allowing the brain to be put in gear before the foot is inserted into the mouth. How often do we say things we regret later? When have we had to apologize for a hasty action that wasn’t thought through before we inadvertently hurt someone else?
We obtain wisdom by practicing wisdom, seeking to be guided by wisdom, and working hard to squelch hasty words or actions that run counter to wisdom. Solomon was blessed to receive wisdom as a gift from God. Some of us have received other gifts, but we have to work harder at cultivating the gift of wisdom. It may or may not come automatically with the passage of years. There are wise young people as well as foolish old people! Ask God today for the gift of wisdom to guide your day.
All things wise and wonderful come from you, O God. Help us today to seek to be guided by your wisdom rather than our own. Our sight is partial and our understanding is limited, but you know and see all things. We praise you and thank you for all your love in Christ our Lord. Amen.
