3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.
Doing some Black Friday shopping? In the midst of crazy shoppers grabbing for the best deals, I think it is good to be reminded that God has given us all the tools we need to live a godly life. Because we know Jesus, we can try to be like him. Escape corruption – that’s a helpful reminder when we think we have to have the latest technology and gadgets!
Peter reminds us that the best gifts to look for are ones we can’t really wrap to put under the tree – gifts of faith and goodness, knowledge and self-control, perseverance and godliness, mutual affection and love. So if you’re tempted to grumble at the traffic and long lines, impatient shoppers and misleading ads, remember we already have everything we need – in Christ.
Keep us safe, Lord, as we are out and about today. Help us keep our shopping in perspective, because you are worth far more than any bargain we could find. Thank you for the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
