“Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. I John 4:7-8
When I first got saved, this was a scripture chorus I learned and we sang it in worship. It was a fun, little sing-songy tune to sing with all my new brothers and sisters. It taught me as a new Christian that the idea and attitude I have toward others is to be love, just as God loved me enough to save me from my sin. I John continues on in verses 9-11:
“In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”
We demonstrate godly love to the extent we accept God’s love and the sacrifice Jesus made for our behalf. How much do we want God to love us? How much do we want to be loved by others? Just as Jesus sacrificed himself on the cross so we might live, we’re admonished to sacrifice ourselves on behalf of others. How do we do that? We notice when a friend or neighbor is in need and we come to their aid. Someone in distress and we take time out to call, visit, or pray with them. We put other’s needs in front of our wants. When we encourage the downtrodden. James 1:27 tells us: “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.”
This is how we put others first. This is how we should live. This is the life Jesus sacrificed for. This is the sacrifice of love. As we walk in this way of love, We walk close to God.
Lord I love You. But that wasn’t in my nature at first, it is only because You loved me. Continue to fill me with Your love so I can be close to you and demonstrate Your love to others. I want to be like you. I want to have the heart of love, mercy, compassion that You have and give to me. Keep close, let me not waiver from Your side. Continue to use me. Lord, I give myself to you, let my sacrifice be pleasing and acceptable in Your sight, my Lord and my Redeemer. Amen.
