Jeremiah 31:31-33

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

God sent his son Jesus to this world to show us the new covenant. God promises to put his love into our hearts – in a new way – and to give us eternal life, as long as we live up to our end of the deal. But I am human and it is often hard to keep my faith strong and easier to let selfishness and opinions of others get in the way of keeping the Lord as my #1 priority.

Before Jesus, the written laws of God, outlined in the Torah, guided worship and daily living for the Jews. But Jesus came to show us that following all those written laws are not as important as the love God places in our hearts for Him and for others. And all we have to do is to love God with all of our hearts, minds, souls and strength first, and love our neighbors as ourselves, and have the faith that He will lead us to Peace. Then we will be fulfilling our part of the covenant. And He will forgive our sins and we will be His people.

Dear God, please help me to remember that I will never be perfect, and will always need your forgiveness. I realize that I don’t always put you first in my life and need your help to follow the path that Jesus walked, to try and hold up my end of the covenant. Help me to love you with my whole being and use that love to help others where they are in this world. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen
