Joshua 3:5-9

Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.” Joshua said to the priests, “Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the people.” So they took it up and went ahead of them.

And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses. Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the Jordan’s waters, go and stand in the river.’”

Joshua said to the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the Lord your God.

This is the account of the crossing of the River Jordan, into the Promised Land. Like Israel’s deliverance from Egypt when they crossed the Red Sea, again the waters parted to allow the people to cross on dry ground. The ark of the covenant went before them to lead them.

Joshua tells the people to consecrate themselves. Get ready. Be prepared to perceive what the Lord is going to do. That’s good instruction for any one of us. Any day God has a good plan for us. Any day could be a crossing moment, when suddenly we realize how the Lord is working in our midst.

God will fulfill his promises, just as God fulfilled his promises to the people of Israel that they would one day enter God’s Promised Land. We need not remain stuck in the mud when the Lord has prepared for us a dry path where we may walk. We need not wander in the wilderness when God is there to lead us through.

We pray today to have open eyes and receptive hearts, to discern what miracles you have prepared for us. If we are not ready, we could miss what you are doing. We could let the day go by and not realize how you are at work. Go before us, Lord, so that we may follow you. Amen.
