Ephesians 5:1-2
Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

When I consider what kind of example God has given us, I am humbled and grateful. God has given us a place of great beauty where we may live. God has created intricate and interconnected systems designed to keep us in healthy and happy. When we mess up, God doesn’t walk away from us, but forgives us, helps us and by his Spirit, works within us to help us make better choices the next time. God’s ultimate example of love was to send Jesus. His physical life taught us a new way to live, and his death has erased all judgment from us because he took upon himself all our sins on the cross. By his resurrection we receive the promise of eternal life like his. Jesus is the fragrant offering and the sacrifice that makes us whole.

Because we have received such an example, we may be encouraged to walk in the way of love like Jesus. We are motivated to try better to put aside our anger and resentment and feelings of entitlement, as if we deserve to get ahead of someone else. We can try to live the same kind of life as Jesus – one of love, sacrifice and service. May we do so – for him.

Gracious God, protect all children on earth and protect all of us as well. Thank you – for your love, shown to us in our savior, Jesus Christ. Thank you for the privilege of serving you. Amen.
