John 1:6-9

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

Imagine that there was a man, that there was a woman, sent from God, whose name was… Now insert your own name. God has sent you and me. John’s purpose in living was to be a witness of Jesus, the Light coming into the world. What is your purpose? Why are you here?

I hope that when my time on earth is done, God will say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” I hope that whatever I am able to accomplish, it was to the best of my abilities and strength. The psalmist writes, “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.” (Psalm 84) Even a seemingly insignificant job is good when we do it for the Lord.

May we consider today how to live out our purpose here on earth well. The best we can, let us use the opportunities we have, because we too have been sent from God to give glory to God’s name.

God our heavenly Father, thank you for your Spirit given to us, guiding us to do your work. Thank you that you call us your sons and daughters, that you bestow upon us life for a particular purpose. Help us be faithful to the work you have given us to do. Help us love well, serve well and speak well of you in our daily life. For this we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
