10 Better is one day in your courts
than a thousand elsewhere;
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
the Lord bestows favor and honor;
no good thing does he withhold
from those whose walk is blameless.
12 Lord Almighty,
blessed is the one who trusts in you.
This psalm begins by saying, “How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord… Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself where she may have her young, a place near your altar.”
The psalmist cries out that it is better to have only one day in God’s courts, rather than spending a thousand days apart from God. Even if he is assigned to be only a doorkeeper to God’s house and not privileged enough to actually enter, that will be enough. God will be his sun and shield out in the elements, if he cannot find shelter in God’s house.
No matter where we are today, or where our paths take us, God remains with us. We choose whether to serve God, even humbly as a gatekeeper, or whether we will choose to dwell in some other place that does not honor the Lord. We pray to grow in faith and trust, and to know how blessed we are to belong to God’s family.
Lord, watch over us as a shield and protection. Help us keep close to you, like a sparrow building her nest near your altar. Use us in whatever work you have for us today, whether humble or important. Keep us in your care, to walk in right paths for the sake of your name. Amen.
