“He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.”
This sounds vaguely familiar, doesn’t it? We think about the disciples in the boat on the Sea of Galilee being frightened and scared during a storm, and Jesus knowing their anxiety spoke and calmed the storm. Today’s scripture passage is a prophetic psalm, being written hundreds of years before the events in the gospels. But just as it was true in the disciples’ day, it is true for us today.
We often feel like we’re in that boat as well. Things are out of our control, waves lapping at our feet, being tossed and afraid of our lives being overturned. And of course, our first response or intention is either to try to regain control of the situation or to despair. In the midst of the storm though, God is there for us, no matter what the circumstances, no matter the time of day, or who’s there with us. God is faithful to hear our cry and prayer and to save us when we turn to Him. He does calm our storms when we reach to Him. Reflect on some of the stormy times in our lives and how God brought His peace in those times.
In addition to calming the storm, the Psalmist encourages us to tell others of the unfailing and wonders of God, and to praise Him for His deeds. Why? Because it is our privilege to tell the world of the wondrous works of God. To demonstrate our love for Him as well as acknowledging His love for us. We sing hymns in worship every Sunday, but is that enough? The riches and benefits of being daughters and sons of God should be more joyous in our lives than anything else. Is that true for me? Is that true for you? Make it a point in our lives, starting today, to declare how Great is our God!
You are great O God and Your majesty and righteousness covers the earth. The heavens and earth declare your glory. You have kept your promises, You have given me salvation and peace, and I will not keep silent. You sustain me and I will tell of your greatness. Be Exalted O God, above the heavens and earth. I am not ashamed to tell others of your goodness and what you’ve done for me. So that Your name is established in my life. You are My God and I love You. Amen.
