1 Peter 2:9-11

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.

This passage reminds me of two songs. The first is “Aliens and Strangers” by DeGarmo and Key. It was one of the first songs heard when I was introduced to this new-fangled music called Christian music back when I was a member of our youth group. You can listen to it on Youtube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AWTPkdLRTA. The lyrics are:

Sunday morning,
the pews are filled
With friends of mine,
yea, friends of mine
And for the first time,
I look around and I realize,
I realize

My closest friends
Are aliens and strangers,
Travelers here, living with danger
My closest friends
Are aliens and strangers,
Travelers here, living with danger

I used to wonder why
they act so strange
Now I know, yeah now I know
I heard the preacher say
This world we’re in
Is not our home,
It’s not our home

My closest friends are
Aliens and strangers,
Travelers here, living with danger
My closest friends are
Aliens and strangers,
Travelers here, living with danger

They’re pilgrims just passing through
Heroes away from their homeland
And since I’ve discovered the truth
I look at my friends
And I can’t help but think that..

All my friends, they’re aliens
Just passing through,
yeah, they’re aliens
My closest friends
yeah, they’re aliens
My closest friends
ohh they’re aliens
Just passing through,
Just passing through.

The second song that came to mind is by Building 429 “Where I Belong” which is also available on youtube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=he32vwlKQPY.

Sometimes it feels like I’m watching from the outside
Sometimes it feels like I’m breathing but am I alive
I won’t keep searching for answers that aren’t here to find

All I know is I’m not home yet
This is not where I belong
Take this world and give me Jesus
This is not where I belong

So when the walls come falling down on me
And when I’m lost in the current of a raging sea
I have this blessed assurance holding me

All I know is I’m not home yet
This is not where I belong
Take this world and give me Jesus
This is not where I belong

When the earth shakes I wanna be found in You
When the lights fade I wanna be found in You

All I know is I’m not home yet
This is not where I belong
Take this world and give me Jesus
This is not where I belong

Where I belong, where I belong
Where I belong, where I belong

This passage and these songs remind me that this is not our final home. When the politics and the lies of this world seem to find us at every turn, we can rely on the promise that God is with us and we should not be afraid. It also reminds me that there will be times when I feel like I am on the outside looking in, but that is O.K. We are meant to be set apart; we are a chosen people of God. He will not forsake us or let us down. He may not answer our prayers exactly the way that we want, but he will always find a way. We just need to follow where he leads because we are just passing through as aliens and strangers to this world.

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for coming to earth to set us apart as people of God. Lift up those who need to be lifted up and comfort those that need comfort. Help us know you better and help us when we feel separated from the world to know that you are with and separating us for your purpose. You are doing a good thing and help us know to praise you when we feel that separation. Every day we face challenges, but help us know that you will never leave us. Amen.
