6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
8 “I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.
Our passage for today comes from a section that our Bible entitles, “Warnings and Encouragements.”
There is much of which we should rightly be afraid. Rather than be afraid of one who can kill the body, Jesus reminds us to fear him who has the power to throw us into hell. Yet on the other side of the equation is God who demonstrates love by his care of mere sparrows, or who keeps a record of the number of hairs on our head (and yes, I realize for some that is a relatively easy task!). Jesus says, “You are worth more than many sparrows.”
We are entrusted with a task, however, and that is to publicly acknowledge that Jesus is Lord. Say it, live it, and know that in the same way, Jesus will also acknowledge us before the angels who keep God’s records. Keeping track of hair is a small thing; keeping track of who is a professing believer in Christ our Savior is quite another. Yet it is a task that has eternal ramifications.
Lord God, have I acted in ways that show others I put my trust in you through Jesus Christ? Will I speak well of you today? Give me the courage and insight to seek appropriate ways to share the faith I profess, that may help another going through a crisis. As you have encouraged me, so let me be of encouragement to others, in Jesus Christ my Savior. Amen.
