Luke 1: 46-50

And Mary said, “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.

Mary has been called transparent, in that she allowed God to work more completely through her than God can work in most people. Because of her attitude of humility, God could be glorified in her. She was like a valley that shows off the splendor of a high mountain, in that we see a contrast between them. In her lowliness, she allowed others to see God’s majesty. God did mighty things through her, but she was blessed in knowing God’s greatness and mercy and holiness.

Gracious God, let us give you honor and praise for your goodness and mercy, your power and your glory, your holiness and your love. As we lower ourselves we raise you up; as we put ourselves in right perspective to you, we see how great you are. We praise you, in Christ our Lord. Amen.
