Third Sunday in Lent, March 8

John 2:18-22

The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” But the temple he had spoken of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

I read these verses in both the King James Bible and the Good News Bible. They were helpful in my understanding of the passage. The Jews did not understand what Jesus was really saying when he said, “Tear down the temple and in three days I will build it again.” Unless you are a Christian, you cannot understand that Jesus was telling the people that his body was the temple and in three days he will rise and go to his Father.

Thank you, God, that Jesus’ message was written in the Bible for us to understand the crucifixion, that he would die and rise again. Amen.
