1 John 3:2 – 7
2Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
4Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact sin is lawlessness. 5But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
7Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.
This passage reminds us that we already are children of God and have been given eternal life – just by believing in Jesus Christ. And I think it is also reminding us that our whole lives, we are learning to be like Christ. To understand and see him – we will need to learn to be like him. We will need to be righteous and live our lives every day showing not only our family and neighbors but also those people that we don’t like how they act – a love like God has for us. His love is a fair love that isn’t self-centered and doesn’t show bias; it is a love that shows justice and doesn’t have favorites. It is hard to put down the ways of the world, to stop comparing and criticizing and thinking only of those close to us, and to learn to live without sin. But if we can truly live and love as Christ has shown us, in God’s time, we will see and know him as he is.
Dear God, please help us to understand that many of the hardships we face, are your lessons to teach us how to live as you would want us to. Give me patience and open my heart to love in the fair and righteous way that Jesus taught in his life. Please guide my words and my actions as we go through the stressful holiday season to make it the joyous celebration of Christ’s birth that it was meant to be.
