Romans 15:5-6

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Endurance – this is the quality that keeps us slugging away at a problem until it gets resolved, to keep us from otherwise throwing up our hands and giving up.

Encouragement – this is the quality we give to someone needing help with endurance, when they might otherwise find it impossible to keep dealing with a problem. Encouragement makes endurance possible.

God gives us both these qualities so that we may have the same attitude of mind toward each other as Jesus had with God. God is one, and wishes us to be one. One mind, one voice, together enduring what we must, and standing beside one another to encourage each another not to give up. Life can be hard, but God never meant us to go it alone. When we recognize the source of these twin qualities, that is, God, we may give praise to God in Jesus Christ.

Gracious God, help me grow in the qualities of endurance and encouragement. Help me grow strong enough to deal with whatever problems are before me, but not so I think I have to solve a problem all alone. I am not a rock nor an island. Thank you for those whose relationships I treasure, whom I may encourage and who may encourage me, so that together we may endure through the worst life can throw at us. We praise you, God; thank you for Jesus who has gone ahead to show us the way. Amen.
