There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
The opening verses of the gospel of John bear witness to the uniqueness of Jesus’ identity: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” (John 1:1-2) Jesus is God: Jesus is the Word. These identities are inseparable, and John was the first to see this unique relationship of the Father and Son. God has chosen John and commissioned his role as witness to Jesus. He (John the Baptist) came as a witness to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but came to testify to the light.
Keep us close to you, dear God. Keep us seeking you as we try to live as we should. Open our hearts today to your love in Jesus Christ. Amen.
