10 “Now then, just as the Lord promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! 11 I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. 12 Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”
This is Caleb speaking to Joshua. Forty-five years ago, Caleb and Joshua were part of a scouting team to look over the Promised Land. They came back with the report of a rich land and abundant fruit, but the people of Israel were frightened by the presence of those who inhabited the land. They did not trust God to be with them to win the land, so they would not go. Thus they were constrained to wander for the next forty years, until that present generation was gone. Now they have entered the land, and Caleb reminds Joshua of God’s promise to him.
Hear his faith ringing out from his words to Joshua! “I am just as strong as I ever was, at eighty-five years old. I am confident I can go to battle. I’m asking for that hill country that God promised me. The Anakites live there in their large fortified cities, but I know God is with me. I will drive them out, just as God planned.”
Obstacles? No problem. Age? Again, not a problem. Caleb has faith, a strong faith in a strong God, and by faith, he is able to do what God promised him. May we be as attentive to what God is saying to us, and as ready to live by those promises, to the glory of God’s name.
Dear God, forgive my weak faith, and my poor determination to follow in the paths you have set out for me. Let me look at one like Caleb and in his example, be strengthened in whatever tasks I have before me. Let me listen to you through the reading of your word, for you are just as much with me today as you were with Caleb so long ago. Amen.
I can do all things through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13
