Extended reading: meaning of the parable of the sower; parable of the weeds

Matthew 13:31-33

31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”

33 He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.”

This reminds me of the Lord’s Prayer where we are asking God to bring His kingdom to earth as it is in heaven. It seems that Matthew is saying that instead of God making this happen, He wants us to make this change – even though we are merely human. It is our humble efforts that will bring change to the world and make it more like the kingdom of God. We can give money to charity and support the wonderful work that these organizations do, but it may be the simple acts of kindness- a smile for a stranger, letting a young mom with kids go in front of you in the checkout line, listening to your grandma’s story that she has told you hundreds of times already – that will grow a tiny seed of kindness into the large tree that is God’s kingdom on earth.

Dear God, please help us to find ways to show that we are followers of Jesus to our friends, our families and those whom we don’t even know. Help us to understand the message that Jesus brought to this world and give us the faith to enter into your kingdom of heaven. Amen
