Psalm 103:1-5

Praise the Lord, my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
Praise the Lord, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—
who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

There are immeasurably beautiful words in the Psalms, but one commentator has called this psalm the Mount Everest of praise psalms. It is a psalm of David. I might even call it a Mount Vesuvius of praise, because it spills forth from the inmost depths of David’s soul. Praise God’s holiness – God’s perfection and purity, God’s forgiveness, God’s care and protection for humanity, the fullness of God’s being – all this and more.

David endured hardship and difficult times when he feared for his life, yet he knew God was with him through dark valleys and would carry him to safety. No crisis can crush us beyond help when God’s love is present to guide us through. We may look back to that hard time and praise God with joy, when we realize what strength we received, what resources beyond our capacity, that could only come from our Lord. That is the source of our praise. That’s how David feels, what he expresses in these beautiful words.

Do you know why you praise God today? How has the Lord helped you, sustained you, forgiven you, loved you, that may lead you to give God your thanks and praise? May we not forget the Lord’s benefits, that have generously, graciously been given to us! We have been redeemed from the pit, through faith in our savior Jesus Christ. He has crowned us by grace, and turns us around so we may be satisfied with good things. May we praise God from the depths of our souls!

Prayer

I have no words, Lord, to fully express my praise for you. Look into my heart and see what joy I have in knowing you. Forgive my inadequacies and fit me for heaven, where each day I may give you uninterrupted praise for the glory of your name. Until then, let my life be a testimony of love for you. This I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
